Actor James Sikking, known for his roles as Lt. Howard Hunter on 'Hill Street Blues' and the titular character's father on 'Doogie Howser, M.D.,' has died.
Sikking died from complications of dementia at a care facility in Santa Barbara, California, his wife, Florine, told TMZ. He was 75.
Sikking rose to prominence in his Emmy-nominated role as Lt. Howard Hunter on 'Hill Street Blues,' which ran from 1981 to 1987. He played the tough-as-nails police lieutenant with a heart of gold, and his character became one of the most iconic in television history.
After 'Hill Street Blues,' Sikking went on to star in a number of other television shows, including 'Doogie Howser, M.D.' (1989-1993), 'L.A. Law' (1986-1994), and 'NYPD Blue' (1993-2005).
Sikking was a talented actor who brought depth and nuance to every role he played. He will be greatly missed by his fans and colleagues.
